Join us for a screening of “Amá,” followed by a discussion of the film. Between 1960 and 1980 it is estimated that tens of thousands of Native American women were sterilized without their knowledge or consent. Because of poor recordkeeping, that number could be even higher. Though many of these women took their painful stories to the grave, “Amá” focuses on three of these women: Jean Whitehorse, Yvonne Swan and Charon Asetoyer. Each shares their compelling and horrific stories that reveal the abuses committed against Native American women by the U.S. Government during the 1960s and 70s. The film also includes a rare interview with Dr. Reimert Ravenhold, whose ideas helped set the framework for some of the government policies directed at Native American woman, including population control. The film ends with a discussion of the campaign to get a formal apology from the U.S. government and the possibilities of the women to bring a lawsuit. Registration is required. A Zoom link to this online event will be emailed to you after your registration is complete. Funding has been provided by the Pennsylvania Humanities Council and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) as part of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act of 2020. Ages 18+.
